Description

Schooner House (Under Milk Wood) 1989.
Carved and painted wood.

This one- off original automata is inspired by the first act of Dylan Thomas’s ‘Under Milk Wood’. There are no copies. It took almost a year to make.

This is a coin operated glass fronted automata. The opening scene shows Captain Cat asleep in his bunk. The coin triggers and illuminates a fishing boat visible through his window, bobbing in the sea. Captain Cat’s chest rises and falls simulating his breathing. He lies dreaming about his old friends and shipmates who then appear and disappear from various hiding places around the cabin. The characters include: Dancing Williams; Tom Fred the donkey man; Rosie Probert; Jonah Jarvis; Alfred Pomeroy-Jones and Curly Bevan. The lines of the poem appear in word bubbles from the characters and from other hidden places around the cabin.

Coin operated: Size: 70 x 71 x 37cm.
Performance time 2 minutes & 30 seconds.
