Description

Sailor Sam: 1997
Carved and painted wood.

A one-off original automata made as a homage to a friend – the late Sam Smith (1908-1983). I’d known of Sam’s work since the late 1940’s and at the time I began to work on automata, he was the only successful artist making carved wooden objects with movement. “Gladeyes” was Sam’s reference to his wife Gladys and she appears with Sam on the sea in the rowing boat. Images of Sam’s work pass in review in the background.

Wooden cased automata with oval glass view hole. When operated Sam and Gladys row their boat which is bobbing in the moving waters. Gladys head turns and she winks her eye. Scenes in the background float by – depicting images of Sam Smith’s work.

Hand operated. Size: 51 x 75 x 32 cm.
